Customize Your AVG Antivirus for Better Performance

0 komentar

We all know about the prominence of quality antivirus software for our system. It is like a protective shield for our systems that protects them from various Internet attacks. Most of us usually think that, only installing antivirus software in our system resolves everything. I, also used to think in the same way some time back, but reality is a little different. Other than just installing antivirus software, its appropriate configuration is equally important, to stay away from the security threats.
Last week, I bought a new laptop, and in order to install AVG antivirus, I called an Online Computer Support service provider. This skilled technician asked some probing question related to my system’s configuration, and installed the security tool quickly. Apart from just installing the antivirus, he further optimized it to make it securer. It was a great experience!
So, for those, who think in the same way, as I used to consider in the past. Here is a set of some useful tips to configure you AVG antivirus software, which was told by the online computer repair technician:
·         Step1: After the antivirus installation, you will be prompted with the first time antivirus run wizard. You need to click the button namely “next”, located on this screen.

·         Step2: Next screen appears; click the option named as “Check for Updates”. After that, select the checkbox namely “Do not ask for update source next time”, and click the button “Internet” to download updates. Then you may view a section called as “Update section”, click on “Update” button on that screen.  It is essential to keep your antivirus up to date with the latest patches and fixes.

·         Step3: Updating process may take some time, depending on your system’s and Internet’s performance, click “Ok” after its completion.

·         Step4: After that, the screen namely “Rescue Disk” appears which can be useful for virus scanning as well as removing various attacks. You can customize its settings as per your requirements, and click “Next” after that.

·         Step5: The next two screens will be related to e-mail settings and scanning computer respectively, which are very important for configuring e-mail scanner and scanning of the whole computer. You can optimize them, as per your requirements, and click “Next” button.

·         Step6: After that, you may be prompted with the registration steps, which can be skipped as well. Next, click on the button “Continue” to complete the process

The above-mentioned post installation steps can be helpful for you to optimize your AVG security software, without even consulting any online computer repair organization.

Online Computer Repair Service for Windows 7 installation

0 komentar

I bought a new desktop last month. Being excited I decided to start from scratch.
Originally, it was shifted with Windows XP service pack 3, and Office 2007, which didn’t allure me. Being driven by passion, I uninstalled or formatted the system hard-disk so as to get everything new and dazzling.
I started the Windows 7 installation with a Windows 7 Home Premium DVD, which I had got from a retail shop. The setup process started well, but it went nowhere, it stopped with an error message "No Operating System Found" or "NTLDR is Missing".
It really irritated me. I contacted the PC vendor, but that was useless. He said, “Everything was right from our end and you must have done something wrong.” His answer added oil to the fire. But at the moment I kept mum.
In the evening, I chatted with a friend regarding the Windows 7 installation. He gave me a web-link of a company which was good in delivering online computer support. Initially, I thought “how it can happen?” And is it practically feasible that someone can remotely install the operating software.
As the instruction was from a reliable source, so it holds gravity, and I called up the service provider over the phone. Initially, I was puzzled while providing information about the system. Then being a drowning man I kept my head cool. I didn’t want to sour the curd.
The technician then offered me an article for Windows 7 installation, which ultimately solved the purpose. Then I came to know that actually, the problem was nothing it was bit ignorance, as I had not selected the right option under the boot menu in BIOS so that it can boot from DVD.
Thanks, computer technical support was there, which ended up my frustration.

How to record PS2 Game play cheap

0 komentar
I’ve been searching for a cheap device to record my Playstation 2 game play but frequently stumbled upon the Dazzle video capture cost around USD $79.99 in most online store. Although I am very interested but I won’t spend that much of money to get it because I don’t see any other use apart from recording my PS2 game plays.

Not until recently I saw some people’s video reviews showing off their console recording stuff in YouTube. So finally I found this device called USB EasyCap 2.0 which cost around $11 to $20 based on the reviews. Not only it is much cheaper than Dazzle but also capable of recording other electronic media such as VCR, DVD Player, TV, Video Camera, or whatever recordable media you name it.

Having the thought of waiting too long, I opted not to search the item online but instead wandering around Kuching town to search for one. However the only place I can see the USB EasyCap is CompuWay IT store at the Wisma Saberkas building where it cost around RM160. Considering the price is still quite expensive, I ended up searching in Lelong.com.my where it is sold around RM59 to RM70 inclusive of shipping cost to Kuching. By the time I saw it and comparing the price with local IT store is much cheaper, so I did not hesitate to purchase get one of that. After 3 days later it was delivered to my home via PosLaju, and finally I got something I really want. Oh Yeah!

After setup and some hands on experience of using it, this is the video I made in YouTube for everyone to judge how good is this device.

•Device = USB 2.0 EasyCap
•Software = VHS to Video SE 2.0
•Model = DC60
•Console = Playstation 2 (Fat Console)
•Game = Winning Eleven 15
•Recording Platform = Desktop PC
•Operating System = Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
•Graphic/Video Card = N/A (Standard Integrated Intel Graphic Card)

The only drawback is the screen capture size is too small when using the VHS to Video 2.0. Alternative software like Nero 7 Ultra and AVS4You video software are able to record in full screen but the lag is paramount. So its still useless.

How To Record USB EasyCap DC60 in Full Screen

The VHS to DVD software that comes with the EasyCap DC60 is considerably primitive, as there are limited options to configure the software especially to resize the display aspect ratio.

However i am not so disappointed after many trial and errors testing it on other video recording software finally i found the solution how to record the EasyCap DC60 version in full screen. Its a coincidental discovery when trying my old PixelView TV Tuner PV-BT878P in Windows 7. My idea was to connect the PS2 directly to the TV Tuner but unfortunately there is no port for the PS2 white, yellow, and red RCA cable. But still i decided to install the PixelView TV sofware.

After the installation, i find the software has the options to select recording devices that is connected to my PC. When plugging in the EasyCap 2.0 and it was detected. Then i tried to turn on my PS2 and indeed i was able to play the games without any lag at all. And of course the most important is the PixelView TV display ratio can be adjusted at any size i wanted just using the mouse to resize it.

So now finally everything works as i want it to be. Thanks to PixelView TV software.

Download the Software@ "Prolink MicroSystem

Go to Download PCI/PCI Express. Then select your region. As for me i have downloaded the driver + software for Play TV Pro 2 PV-M4500 Win Vista 32 as i am using Windows 7 OS. After downloaded open the RAR file and select TVApp and install the TV application. Once the installation done open the TV software and right click on the screen and select settings. Make sure your EasyCap device is plug-in to your PC. In the setting screen select the USB2.0 Grabber done. Now you can test your device.

March Observations OKI Releases Wireless Upgrade for B700 Series of Mono Printers and Sends My Mind A Wandering

0 komentar

also published in The Hard Copy Observer, March, 2012

Observations: OKI Releases Wireless Upgrade for B700 Series of Mono Printers and Sends My Mind A Wandering

[March 27, 2012] Among the news earlier in March (March 8 to be exact) was the announcement from OKI Data Americas (OKI) that the company was introducing a “user-installable wireless option” for OKI’s line of B700 series of monochrome printers, available March 15 for the list price of $311. At first, the news seemed fairly routine, with built-in wireless usually available on many competitive printers in the B700’s class. OKI offering an upgrade to its range of 42-52 ppm printers made sense, even if the oddly-priced $311 upgrade represented a seemingly big chunk of the printers’ $625 to $1,249 base list prices.

Despite the OKI release giving nods to observations of the day, such as director of marketing Carl Taylor’s quotes about “mobile devices and wireless connectivity becoming increasingly commonplace” and the new upgrade “allowing users to print anytime and virtually any place, thereby helping to improve productivity,” I wondered if there was more to the story. I have come to respect the OKI marketing group as very customer-savvy, and I was eager to get beyond the release language into the next level of understanding. But before that conversation could take place, I let my mind and curiosity wander a little more.

In thinking through the announcement and doing a little competitive research, my reflection on the whole business of wireless-enabled printers took my mind into some rather dusty corners. For example, I blogged on this subject four-and-a-half years ago (see “Wi-Fi Printing—Look Ma No Cables” and my November 2007 Observations column in The Hard Copy Observer) about my hands-on experience with a Lexmark Wireless All-in-One, a Wi-Fi-equipped ink jet machine. I noted at the time that the company’s strong commitment to wireless printing was reflected by including the capability prominently in the official name of the product. In addition to reporting on the progress I had in using that machine, I also went back to the mid-1990s, when I had a personal hand in developing and launching an Infrared-equipped “wireless” LaserJet and that mixed bag of tremendous visionary implementation and poor commercial acceptance (though the printer itself was a huge success, the number of users printing via Infrared was miniscule).

But things have changed, steadily and dramatically. In the intervening years, industry leader HP bragged about how many of its printers were Wi-Fi-equipped (seeming to catch up and pass Lexmark), but now HP has changed to boasting about the millions of ePrint printers the firm has shipped (even if most of those printers remain Wi-Fi-ready). And the whole mobile work/life craze continues unfettered, with Apple’s latest iPad model announced earlier this month, with shipment numbers quickly racing past comparable PC shipment levels. And of course, smartphones continue their march towards pervasiveness.

Going back to that earlier column, wireless upgrade kits were also available in that timeframe, from a number of network-savvy companies. But what has really changed? The whole idea of “unplugging” the printer really does not seem so important as long as the machine is tethered to a power cord—the device would seem to generally remain as the “base station” with mobile users (defined as mobile users by their wireless laptops or increasingly, tablets and smartphones), whether nearby or far-flung.

So OKI had some explaining to do, and I was sure they would. I had a recent conversation with Keith Fenton, Product Planning Manager, MFP Software and Solutions, and Roman Orzol, Product Planning Manager, Mono and Mono MFP, and they provided strong customer rationalization along with an update on the evolution of Wi-Fi.

First, according to Fenton, OKI provided the B700 printer upgrades with a more general wireless-printing need in mind (as noted in the release quotes above), but more specifically, focused on customers in facilities like “production lines, warehouses and manufacturing sites” where flexibility in locating printers could be enhanced by not having to worry about a wired network connection. Fenton continued, “The match between these workgroup printers and wireless capabilities is really for the specific needs of these customers who want to reduce their IT headaches when moving around their printers in industrial environments.”
OKIs B730 and its ilk now have WiFi upgrades with specific customer needs in mind

Coming from the company who still sells a fair share of dot matrix printers into harsh environments like auto mechanics and paint shops, the “location flexibility” benefit has risen to the surface. And would OKI consider building the wireless feature standard into the B700, considering the firm’s only other Wi-Fi standard device is an MFP? “No,” says Fenton, “but in the case of a specific vertical asking for it, we would certainly consider building it in for them.”

Second, Orzol educated me a little bit about the progress of the Wi-Fi world. “We offer this in a, b, g, and n Wi-Fi formats, at both the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz speeds. OKI is part of the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the products include the Wi-Fi Protected Setup standard.”

While admittedly not new to the printing industry, these updates show the progress being made in the wireless printing world, especially to my previous 1995 example and its third-party drivers and three-foot distance limitations.

In conclusion, I have to chuckle at the confluence of OKI’s thinking, especially on the benefits of Wi-Fi printing, the “conspicuous by its absence” nature of Wi-Fi in consumer printers today, and some of my thinking from the past, as I read through the final words of that November 2007 column about my hands-on experiences with that Wi-Fi-equipped Lexmark machine. I quote the final paragraph of that column here, with some relief that I am certain at least some of the humor was intentional.

“All in all, I think Lexmark (and by inference the rest of the industry) is on the right track in supplying easy-to-use wireless printing. There are certainly other ways to share a printer, but the placement flexibility offered by wireless is nice, and even saving a USB slot is worth something. As more home LANs spring up, the utility of wireless seems positive enough to make its presence in consumer printers a future standard, and only ‘conspicuous by its absence.’ The test on my home LAN will really come with the holidays, as our house fills up with laptop-toting late-teens and early-twenties family members. We will see what they think about the wireless machine. But oops, that’s right, they are in the age group that does not print…”

Keeping Ink Control with Canon cli 8 pgi 5 ink chips

0 komentar
We have received so many questions over the last eight months, that I thought it would be good to share them with you.

Canon Printers consistently win top awards in their field. Canon produces great paper, great printers and excellent cameras. But when it comes to being Green with planet earth, Canon does not make that very easy for anyone.

When you purchase a Canon printer, or multifunction machine, you pay a price that is sometimes downright unbelievable. Canon is known to add a printer to camera package, for as little as $10! They offer excellent printers for the amazing sum of $40 and up. And if you are a savvy shopper, you may find incredible deals on New Egg, Tiger Direct, J&R, Buy.com or even TechforLess.

What most people do not realize when they purchase a printer is how much they will pay for consumables.

In the case of cli-8, and pgi-5 Canon ink cartridges, you can expect to pay between $15 and $18 a cartridge, or if you go to Costco, you may get a four cartridge multi-pack for $55.

So how many color photographs or pages, will you get for all that money ($55 + $18 = $73).

Based on the standard of 5% color coverage, you will get as many as 280 pages. Please remember that 5% color coverage is certainly not an 8.5 x 11 full color photograph - you will get a whole let less of these. But for average documents, with a little color here and there, 280 pages is spot on, and you may even extend that number to over 300.

Well at this point, you need to ask yourself how much do you print?

If you print a couple of photographs every two or three months, and just run a few letters, you probably will only need to replace your cartridges once or twice a year - so your costs overall are not that high.

If you have children, and, or a home business, you may be replacing cartridges once every month, and that can be very expensive.

So what can you do?

Lets look at 9 options:

1) Refill your oem Canon cartridges, and over-ride your ink control warnings.
PROS: super savings on ink.
CONS: messy, annoying over-riding the ink warnings every time you print, invalidates your printer warranty, and if you have a fax - forget it, it will not work.

2) Replace your oem Canon cartridges with compatible ink cartridges.
PROS: much cheaper ($3 a cart versus $15 - 17)
CONS: you have to peel off the chip from your old canon cartridge, and glue it onto the compatible cartridge, and again you have to over-ride the ink warnings every time you print, which invalidates your printer warranty, and if you have a fax - forget it, it will not work.

3) Buy Compatible Ink Cartridges with chips.
PROS: Cheaper than Oem ($5 - $8 each versus $15 - $17 each), Ink Control works, Warranty is undisturbed.
CONS: Be careful if you purchase remanufactured cartridges - some do not meet the standard and may leak. Make sure you know the quality of the ink before you buy, because some inks have not been filtered properly, have excessive alcohol levels, do not have uv components, and thus may fade faster, or clog printer heads.

4) Use a Continuous Ink System (CIS) system.
PROS: never worry about ink control again, never run out of ink again, you can see the ink levels, bulk ink is very cheap compared to cartridges. this is a green choice.
CONS: Be careful choosing your system, there are no inspection standards developed yet for these. Some will be outstanding, but the horror stories if you get a poorly built system may not only ruin your printer, but they may ruin your furniture and carpet. So do your homework before you buy one of these.

5) Reset & Refill
PROS: Resetters are now available that will reset the chips on your Canon Cartridge so it will be recognized by your printer, and will continue to read ink levels. RKS Technik engineered the first stand alone resetter in 2005, and is currently into their fourth version as of this writing. All the cli-8/pgi-5 resetters are either old RKS versions (like those sold by Sudhaus) or are copies of the RKS. I will write another whole article about that later.
CONS: refilling is still a messy job. The worst part of course is plugging up the hole after you refill the cart.

Still to come:

6) Reset with Chip Extenders, and compatible cartridges
7) Reset with chips on Permanent Refillable Cartridges
8) Auto Reset Chips, with Ink Control, Chip Extenders, and Compatible cartridges
9) Auto Reset Chips, and Permanent Refillable Cartridges

Is Your Router Honest

0 komentar

What happens when you suffer devastating pain with your router? You have brought it brand new, and expected to run it like anything, but it’s not ready to serve you the way you want. If you are unable to browse the Internet, getting errors on your favorite pages and peripherals are not responding then its worth to read this post.
First let me clear that your router has gone dishonest, and you need to troubleshoot the device to get the things on track. Well, I don’t think that all of you would be agree with the usage “dishonest” here. However, experts’ perception is that there is nothing wrong with the device; it’s the only set-up and configuration issues which flood the problem into.

The first step of router troubleshooting starts from self-verification. You need to check the cable connectivity, power supply and router LED status. Probably the mechanical fault, if any can be diagnosed at this stage. Else go ahead with the router console configuration; check the CPU utilization, memory allocation. The router can stop responding due to a security-related problem, such as a worm or virus.
At times you need to reduce the amount of IP traffic, perform memory diagnosis and clear off viruses and malware from the machine, and reconfigure the router device. These could be cumbersome, and may require advanced troubleshooting, which can be done by Router Support professionals only.
The concept of remote router troubleshooting is getting popular owing to its on-demand service feasibility, effectiveness, and minimal maintenance charge. As soon you permit experts to have the remote session, they can do router set-up, configuration or troubleshooting as per situation.
Eventually, you can share the Internet and the network resources in an error-free state.

Observations The YouTube for Documents

The YouTube for Documents

Imagine if there was such a thing as YouTube for documents. The mind stretches to picture a Web-based repository where users from around the world could upload favorite documents to be shared with a vast network of other interested users. And as with YouTube, this personal sharing and networking could be a source of education and humor, a forum to introduce new entertainers (maybe authors, if not singers and dancers) and new products, and, to some level anyway, drive societal trends. Like YouTube, millions of visitors would regularly check in to see what was new and what was there to share, only not with videos but with documents in their myriad forms.

These documents would run the gamut: historic or current, scanned or application-generated, in PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, and any other reasonably common document format. And through the use of the magic of Web 2.0 technology, this repository would work simply and seamlessly, with free access and unlimited storage capacity. And also like YouTube, visitors could easily cut-and-paste any document image visible from within the repository into any other Web site or blog, increasing the reach and frequency by orders of magnitude.

Now, to get a little mercenary, think of the printing that would ensue. While some of the documents would be suitable as view-only, many others would cry out for printing. The ink and toner would flow like never before. The promise of distribute-and-print was conceived originally as occurring primarily within confined corporate and private network settings or through controlled subscription arrangements, but in this incarnation, an explosion of print volume would be set off, as growing throngs of users gained access to millions of documents.

Well, stop imagining. This fantasy is a reality, courtesy of Scribd (pronounced, “scribbed”), a San Francisco Bay area startup company that has been online at www.Scribd.com since March 2007. At the time of the company’s launch, it was no less than TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington who assigned Scribd the label the “YouTube of Documents.” After a little more than a year, the site now includes two million uploaded documents, and the number continues to grow. Up to one million users per day visit the site, leading to 15 million to 20 million visitors per month.

Other than the sheer growth in documents and users that Scribd has experienced during the past year, a new document viewer is one more interesting development (literally), especially for the printing and imaging industry. Introduced by Scribd and implemented into its site in recent months, the new document viewer is called iPaper.

Jason Bentley, director of community development at Scribd, shared a little of the history behind iPaper. The company’s original document-viewing solution, dependent on a more-or-less universal file viewing requirement, was conceived out of inspiration by co-founder Trip Adler in a moment of “unopenable file frustration” during college, and was based on FlashPaper, the Macromedia creation that was eventually a casualty of the Adobe acquisition. To improve the user experience and to create further potential business opportunities, Scribd took the pros and cons from users of its FlashPaper-based site and developed from scratch a new and better universal document viewer named iPaper, which has been implemented on the Scribd site since late 2007.

Bentley downplays the rivalry with Acrobat and PDF, noting for example that iPaper has no interest in emulating the extended tracking and editing features that have grown up around the PDF standard for years and years. Another difference, from this observer’s eye, is that Acrobat and PDF were coming from a printed-page perspective, allowing viewing when and as needed, whereas iPaper has been developed with viewing and sharing in mind, with printing bringing up a bit of a rear position (see image below).

Worth noting, too, with respect to the site’s format-agnostic interests, is Scribd’s range of upload capabilities. Supported file formats include PDF, PostScript, current Microsoft Office flavors including the Office 2007 formats recently added, Open Office, and popular image formats (see image on page 11). Not surprisingly, PDF, DOC, and PPT rank, in that order, among the most popular formats.

I have had a couple of first-hand experiences with Scribd that speak to its usefulness and reach. Last April, I blogged about a new ink jet printer that turned out to be rather popular but (somewhat curiously) under-publicized. After some time-consuming searching, I turned up a data sheet for the product. So in the interest of sharing the document with my readers and seeking an opportunity to try Scribd, I posted that document, as my first and so far only upload. Checking in now, that two-page color data sheet (in PDF format) has been viewed 740 times, although no metrics are available on how many times the document has been printed.

Fast-forwarding to current times, I was pleased to locate a company press release I had been seeking to supplement a blog post. Rather than post a link to the release, I was able to cut-and-paste an embedded iPaper version of the release, readable and printable from directly in the post. That company — GreenPrint, a company familiar to 2007 Observations readers (Observations, 2/07)—has made a decision to upload all future marketing materials on Scribd as one channel for communications.

So looking at the Scribd opportunity through the lens of a printing company, I ask, how can this opportunity for printing be further realized? Will these be the “lost” documents that never are printed, much like those millions upon millions of digital photos that are still “trapped” in arcane camera phone menu structures, never to see the light of day (or favorite printer)? Or will a sensible, enhanced printing solution come to light as a result of one or more of our industry members partnering with Scribd (and a few emerging competitors)?

More on printer industry disruption business models and ambitions

0 komentar
My post from a week ago (see "Time covers Zink") highlighted Time Magazines coverage of this summers new Polaroid PoGo printer, but more significantly, the Time article focused on the primary technology supplier for the product, Zink.

Just as Zink is getting its share of coverage, last years other printer industry out of nowhere surprise, Memjet, has been back in the press as well, as summarized in my post of a few weeks ago. (see "Australian.com: Memjet print head revolution delayed".)

The timing is not all the two disruptive efforts have in common. Their business history and structure have parallels, with the "overnight sensation, ten years in the making" affect, which in the Memjet companies case, having had their technology quivers filled by the arrows from a decade-long path of research and development at Silverbrook Research.

The Zink and Memjet business models also have many similarities, where as component partners the companies physically supply other companies, who build and market the end-user printer products. (Referred to as "licensing" in some quarters, but more on this somewhat-confusing concept in a future post.) In Zinks case the first public partner is Polaroid, and in Memjets case, the partners remain unannounced.

Some differences? This first big (and obvious) difference, is of course the stated "ink vs non-ink" nature of the base technologies. Somewhat ironically, however, its the Memjet vision of disruption around cost-per-print, attributed to the industrys high-priced ink model, while the non-ink (I should say "zero ink") model remains somewhat more expensive to the consumer, at least on a print-by-print basis, at 33 cents for a 2x3 inch photo print (see "Latest Zink Milestone -- PC Mag on the Polaroid PoGo".)

The companies vary in their stated ambitions too. While Zink has been more narrowly focused around photo printing for camera phones, with a longer-term, broader vision of enabling printing where its not been available before, its a much wider array (pardon the pun) of printer industry ambition in the case of the Memjet companies. These include Labels, Home and Office, Photo Retail, and Wide Format, and includes each company with its own headquarters and staff with expertise in their respective market areas.

The upstarts of 2007 are putting their announcements into action in 2008, and there is definitely the promise of many more interesting stories to follow into 2009!
